The Essentials

“In the essentials there must be Unity. In the non-essentials there must be Liberty. In all things there must be Love.”

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.

Being Prepared

Answer on your own why each of the following statements are essential. Then reveal the answers by clicking on each category dropdown.

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. – 1 Timothy 1:17 (NIV)
“You shall have no other gods before me.” – Exodus 20:3 (NIV)

It’s a commandment.

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” – Genesis 1:26 (NIV)

This is essential because if Jesus was just a man he would not be able to atone for our sins.

But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. – Isaiah 59:2 (NIV)
For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. – 1 Corinthians 15:22 (NIV)

This is essential because of what it says in Romans 3:23.

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, – Romans 3:23 (NIV)
For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life. – Leviticus 17:11 (NIV)

This is essential because of what it says in Romans 8:3.

For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, – Romans 8:3 (NIV)

He had to be flesh, blood and bones in order to be received as a perfect sacrifice.

18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. – 1 Peter 1:18-19 (NIV)

This is essential because if Jesus had sinned then he would’ve been no better then the animals that were sacrificed over and over.

And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. – 1 Corinthians 15:14 (NIV)

Again This is essential because if Jesus had not been resurrected he would’ve been no different then the animals sacrificed, our faith would be feudal, we would still be in our sins and be required to make the payments.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. – John 14:6 (NIV)

This is essential because according to the scriptures there is no other way to Heaven.

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 8 not by works, so that no one can boast. – Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)

This is essential because we can not earn our salvation.

Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, – Hebrews 9:27 (NIV)

This is essential because if you go thinking into your death that you’ll have another chance, you are sorely mistaken. Several people tend to believe there is a holding tank for all the good they’ve done that will help them get out of trouble after they die.(wrong)

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, – 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV)
But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, – Matthew 22:31 (NIV)

This is essential because of what it says in 1 Timothy 4:16.

Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. – 1 Timothy 4:16 (NIV)
