The Ten Lepers

Being obedient and aware of our Master.
Thankful, humble, merciful, graceful and full of love.

Jesus goes into a Village

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.
– Luke 17:11 (NIV)
12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him.
– Luke 17:12 (NIV)

Jesus tends to go to the areas and seek out those who are not seeking him.

“I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me. To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’ 2 All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people, who walk in ways not good, pursuing their own imaginations—
– Isaiah 65:1-2 (NIV)
16 Answer me, Lord, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me.
– Psalms 69:16 (NIV)

Those with leprosy (various skin diseases) were outcasts and shunned from society.

They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”
– Luke 17:13 (NIV)

Acknowledge and accepting that He is our Master.

18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
– 2 Peter 3:18 (NIV)

Jesus tests their obedience.

14 When he saw them, he said,

“Go, show yourselves to the priests.”

And as they went, they were cleansed.
– Luke 17:14 (NIV)

Another event with similarity.
But this person was named.

Naaman Healed of Leprosy

Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.
– 2 Kings 5:1 (NIV)
So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha’s house. 10 Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, “Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.”
– 2 Kings 5:9-10 (NIV)
11 But Naaman went away angry and said, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy.
– 2 Kings 5:11 (NIV)

Jesus and the Ten Lepers

14 When he saw them, he said,

“Go, show yourselves to the priests.”

And as they went, they were cleansed.
– Luke 17:14 (NIV)

How many blessings have we received and not been thankful for?

17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?”
– Luke 17:17-18 (NIV)
19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”
– Luke 17:19 (NIV)

Things to Remember:

  • There are blessings as we walk in obedience to Jesus.
  • How do you respond when you receive a blessing from God?
  • Love God, Love your neighbor.
